Basic Requirements for Becoming a Licensed Foster Parent

1.      Desire, willingness, and ability to provide care and supervision for children who are the victims of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

2.      Make the decision to work with children in your home who are at-risk and are in need of a safe, structured, and nurturing environment.

3.      Willingness to work with natural parents and the Department of Social Services on the goal of returning children to their parents after the parents have satisfactorily completed rehabilitative services.

4.      Commit to ensuring your home will meet the Health and Safety requirements that are mandated by the state and this agency.

5.      Complete and provide all paperwork necessary for certification purposes.

6.      Both parents must be interviewed by the Angels of Grace Administrator.

7.      Attend orientation classes (12 hours required).

8.      Completion of a Foster Home Application Packet.

9.      All persons living in the home must complete and autobiography and participate in a home study evaluation.

10. Fingerprinting of all adults (18 and over) in the home. If anyone in the home has been involved in serious criminal activity, the application will probably be denied.

11. Tuberculosis skin test of all adults in the home.

12. Health screening report completed on all applicants by their doctor.

13. Family income and budget information so that Angels of Grace FFA can be assured that the family can provide for their own needs and will not be forced to live off the foster child’s reimbursement check.

14. Completion of first aid and CPR training which are two separate courses.

15. Only two children are allowed per bedroom. (This includes children of foster parents.)

16. Each child must have his/her own bed.

17. Children cannot share bedrooms with adults.

18. The sexes are not allowed to be mixed in a bedroom after the age of five.

19. No more than two children are allowed in a foster home under the age of two.

20. No more commonly used for other purposes may be used as a bedroom. No room used as a public passageway to another room may be as a bedroom.

21. There are special rules for swimming pools and child proofing once a home of a family accepts children under the age of six.

22. The use of corporal (physical punishment) is strictly forbidden.

23. All final decisions regarding certification is made by the Administrator and Angels of Grace Foster Family Agency.

24. Foster parents must have a first aid kit that contains the following contents:

·         First Aid Manual

·         Sterile Dressing

·         Bandages or Roller Bandages

·         Adhesive Tape

·         Scissors

·         Tweezers

·         Thermometer

·         Antiseptic Solution
